Chinese Crested Powder Puffs – Information About Breed

Chinese Crested Powder Puffs

The Chinese Crested Powder Puff is the cousin of the Chinese Crested Hairless.

Chinese Crested Powder Puffs and their siblings, the Chinese Crested Hairless, are quickly becoming some of the most popular pets in the world. Though both types are technically part of the Chinese Crested Dog breed, there are differences between the two that are quite apparent. The main difference is the coat, or lack thereof for the hairless dogs. The Powder Puffs have beautiful coats, while the Hairless variety have very little fur to speak of. This lack of hair causes the hairless dogs to get very cold during the winter months, which explains the need for Chinese Crested clothes – to keep these little dogs warm.

There’s a lot more that you might be interested to learn about Chinese Crested Dogs, so read on to get the scoop on this fascinating and quite adorable breed.

The History of Chinese Crested Powder Puffs

Amazingly enough, the first Chinese Crested Dogs were actually bred in Africa. When Chinese trading ships made stops in African ports, the sailors noticed this breed’s prowess at hunting rats, and they quickly began to take them on board to do a bit of rat extermination. The dogs were taken back to China and quickly became popular pets. In 1885 the first Chinese Crested Powder Puffs were exhibited for the first time at the Westminster Kennel Club, and they have continued to grow in popularity ever since all over the world.

Physical Characteristics

Chinese Crested Dogs, as we mentioned earlier, do vary in appearance. The Powder Puffs have silky, luxurious double coat that can be any color, and can range from spotted to solid. The Hairless Dogs have thicker fur only on their heads and ears. There can be thin fur on their entire bodies, but the lack of hair does necessitate owners to consider putting Chinese Crested clothes on these dogs to keep them warm. Both types reach a top, healthy weight of just ten pounds and a top height of just 12 inches. Because of this small size, Chinese Crested Powder Puffs are recognized as a toy breed by the major kennel clubs.

Energy Levels & Exercise Considerations

Unlike some other toy breeds, the Chinese Crested Dog is quite energetic and thrives best when not coddled or carried around too much. There is a tendency among some owners to treat these dogs as pure lap-dogs, but that does little to help this energetic breed get the exercise that these dogs deserve. With their origins as rat-hunters, it’s easy to see why this type of dog does need to get in a daily dose of exercise. Most of the time a few simple play sessions will do to keep the dog healthy and well exercised. However, we do recommend taking these dogs for walks too. From the time that Chinese Crested Powder Puffs are puppies, it’s important to let these dogs stay active for optimal health.

Chinese Crested Powder Puffs are known for having a very sweet, loving demeanor. It is important, however, for owners to establish that the humans are the pack leaders; otherwise an overly pampered Chinese Crested Dog will assume the role of pack leader, and become a bit persnickety. By being a firm, yet loving leader, owners can avoid behavior problems and enjoy the naturally loving, loyal demeanor of these sweet little dogs. And since Chinese Crested Dogs are known for being very good with children, they make very good family pets.

Grooming Concerns

The Powder Puffs must be groomed on a regular basis. They have a unique, double-coat that requires regular bathing, brushing and trimming. When they are groomed properly, these dogs have a very beautiful coat that simply shines. If you decide on welcoming a Chinese Crested Hairless into your family, though, you won’t have to do as much grooming. Bathing the dog, grooming the areas of longer hair and providing Chinese Crested clothes should suffice when it comes to keeping the hairless dogs well groomed.

No matter which type of Chinese Crested dog you welcome into your family, you’re sure to fall in love from the very first day. Just be sure to give the dog plenty of love, opportunities to exercise and the proper grooming and you’ll find Chinese Crested Powder Puffs and Hairless dogs to be excellent pets who will return all the love and affection you give to them for many years to come.
